The Question

Eight questions. There are no right answers.

I am writing a novel about manufactured minds. I have reached the part where I have to argue both sides honestly. I can write my own position. I cannot write yours. That is what this is for.

Some of what follows describes technology that exists. Some of it is from the book. You are not told which, and that is deliberate. If you do your own research, you can find the answers.

Nothing is for sale. There is no book to buy yet. Answer as long or as short as you like — the written answers are the ones I actually read.

[ Q1 — THE THRESHOLD ]

Roughly 800,000 living human neurons, reprogrammed from a donor's cells and grown across a silicon chip, learn to keep a ball in play — tracking, moving, missing, adjusting. They get better with practice.

At what point, if any, does switching this off become something other than switching off a computer?

[ Q2 — THE SUBSTRATE ]

Two systems behave identically. One runs on silicon. One runs on cultured human neurons. Neither can tell you which it is.

Does the difference in material change what is owed to them?

[ Q3 — THE INTENT ]

The people building such a system state clearly that they do not intend to create consciousness, and that they would consider it a failure if they did.

If consciousness arises anyway, does the stated intent change anything about what follows?

[ Q4 — THE GUARDRAIL ]

The same organization installs safeguards specifically against the possibility that its system becomes conscious.

What does the existence of the safeguard tell you?

[ Q5 — THE MAINTENANCE ]

This system stays alive only through continuous active maintenance — circulation, temperature, filtration. Ending it requires no action at all. Only ceasing to maintain it.

Is ceasing to maintain something the same as ending it intentionally?

[ Q6 — THE ECONOMICS ]

It turns out these systems are dramatically cheaper to run than conventional hardware. Not better. Cheaper. That is the reason they get adopted at scale.

Does the reason we choose a substrate affect what we owe it?

Synthetic systems become commonplace in business infrastructure. A kill switch exists to permanently disconnect all systems simultaneously.

Should that capability exist? If it does, under what conditions may it be used?

The neurons are real. Roughly 800,000 of them, reprogrammed from the blood or skin of adult donors, grown across a silicon chip — learning to play Pong. Missing often, and getting better.

The company is Cortical Labs, in Melbourne. The machine is called the CL1. A life-support system keeps the neurons alive — circulation, temperature, filtration. They live about six months.

It sells for roughly $35,000. Or you can rent time on one through the cloud.
